07 May Pau Codina and Cuarteto Casals at l’Auditori
The month of May gets off to a grand start at the Auditori de Barcelona, thanks to a first-rate program of chamber music events. As part of that, cellist Pau Codina will be performing there on Thursday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m., accompanied by exceptional young musicians on the international scene. The program, titled PIANO QUINTET MASTERPIECES · Schumann & Dvorak will feature the quintet comprising Valeriy Sokolov, violin; Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, violin; Dana Zemtsov, viola; Pau Codina, cello; and Evgeny Izotov, piano. The concert repertoire includes Piano Quintet Nº 2 by Dvorak, a favorite chamber music work for performers, which is a reconstruction of a previous quintet and includes references to folk Czech music. But that is not all: the international all-stars will also be playing Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, dedicated to the composer’s wife, Clara. Due to health problems, Schumann was unable to debut the work himself and so Mendelssohn filled in for him at the last minute, despite the challenges posed by this piano work.
In addition to this, in late May the Quartet Casals will resume its Beethoven series at the Auditori – interrupted due to events on and surrounding October 3, 2017 in Catalonia – and will perform 5 concerts in the Auditori’s Chamber Hall on May 25, 27, 29 and 30. Also, don’t forget that viola player Jonathan Brown will offer a Beethoven Seminar focused on the music that will be featured as part of this series. Once again, further details available at: https://www.auditori.cat/ca/seminari-beethoven
